The history of street furniture
The Romans were responsible for the introduction of Street Furniture as we know it. In those days it was purely functional in the form of stone or wood milestone markers, horse troughs and tethering posts.
Street Furniture is intrinsically linked to all forms of
transport. As technological advances were made and the population grew, new
ways of controlling it were necessary. War ships were de-commissioned and a new
use was found for their cannons. A cannon ball would be fixed in the muzzle,
the cannon inverted, then sunk into the ground. Bollards were an excellent way
of segregating pedestrians from horse drawn vehicles and protecting buildings
from damage.
The first lighting columns were derived once again from ships cannons. The cannon would be embedded in the ground and filled with sand or soil and a pipe inserted which would have held an oil lamp. Initially these were used to help crime ridden port towns where thieves used the cover of darkness to their advantage. Word spread and their use became more popular than ever. The first gas lamps fitted in a public thoroughfare are thought to be those installed in the early 1800s in Pall Mall, Westminster. Illumination was meagre but the lanterns were effective enough to extend their use to other large towns across Britain. Finials topping the lantern were used to hide ventilators - today finials are purely decorative.
Seating became more popular with the advent of railways. As large groups of people had to wait for transport their comfort became of importance and seats were provided so that weary travellers could rest. The design of the type 551 seat shown in this brochure can be traced back to the days of the Great Western Railway.
Tree grilles are a relatively new sight in urban environments. It is thought that the French were first to utilise a form of protection around the base of trees. Cast iron has long been a popular material for this use and remains so today.
