Storm lashes Japan's east coast
Typhoon Wipha has caused devastation across Japan's eastern coast, killing at least 17 people and leaving 50 more unaccounted for.
Many died when houses collapsed or were buried beneath landslides. Click or swipe through the slideshow for more images.
The worst-hit area was Izu Oshima island, just south of Tokyo, as this aerial photo shows. The storm sent large quantities of earth down hillsides, and caused rivers' banks to burst.
Above, Izu Oshima residents survey the damage as rescue workers search among collapsed buildings. Local media are reporting that emergency services are struggling to access many areas on the island.
Izu Oshima is a popular tourist destination with a population of 8,000 people, situated 120km (75 miles) south of Tokyo. Extra police officers and soldiers, as well as additional helicopters have been sent to the island to deal with the aftermath, after 12cm (5 inches) of rain fell in just one hour.
The typhoon is the strongest to hit the Kanto (Tokyo area) region in 10 years. Above, the front of a house is buried beneath huge rocks in Kamakura, 50 km (31 miles) south of Tokyo.
The storm also lashed Tokyo, although the Japanese capital seems to have escaped the worst of the typhoon.
As Tokyo residents grappled with the strong winds, authorities cancelled flights, suspended bullet train services and closed schools.
Nearly 20,000 people were ordered to leave as a result of the typhoon, but many in Tokyo stayed put.
Typhoon Wipha had sustained winds of 126 kilometres per hour (78 mph), with gusts of up to 180 km/h (111 mph).
