Extreme Weather. 

Hawaii lava: Searing-hot lava crashes into the sea off Hawaii.

Kansas tornado: A rare close-up of a tornado from within 150 feet. The twister sucks up dirt as it churns across a rural landscape in western Kansas on May 8, 2008.

Nebraska clouds: Cumulonimbus Mammatus clouds, which are sometimes associated with severe thunderstorms, form over Hastings, Neb.

Phoenix dust storm: The biggest dust storm in living memory rolls into Phoenix on July 5, 2011, reducing visibility to zero. Desert thunderstorms kicked up the mile-high wall of dust and sand.

Iowa fog: A vivid fog bow forms near a lake in western Iowa.

Namibia desert: A salt flat forms in the Sossusvlei Desert, Namibia. The area has such an arid climate that it is virtually uninhabited by humans.

Kansas tornado: A ghostly white tornado spins near a house in Kansas.

Nebraska storm: An extreme class geomagnetic storm produces bright auroras as far south as eastern Nebraska in November 2004.

Japan volcano: An explosive vulcanian eruption of lava at Sakurajima Volcano, Japan.
