Taipei, March 10 (CNA): News surfaced Monday that Taiwan had received warnings earlier this month about threats of terrorist attacks on targets in China but officials said the warnings were most likely unrelated to the disappearance of a Malaysian airliner on Saturday. He added, however, that there was little connection between the tip and the Malaysia Airlines flight that went missing early Saturday en route to Beijing.
The NSB passed on the information to Chinese authorities as well as to Taiwan's Cabinet office of homeland security and other local intelligence, law enforcement and aviation authorities, Tsai said.
As a result, airport security in Taiwan was tightened and extra measures were taken to ensure the safety of flights bound for Beijing, he said.
The tip apparently was first received by China Airlines, one of Taiwan's two major airline companies.
Civil Aeronautics Administration (CAA) Deputy Director-General Lee Wan-lee told reporters that the CAA was alerted by China Airlines on March 4. The warning included threats of a bomb attack on the Beijing airport, he said.Other CAA officials said the agency could not authenticate the warning and it was not clear whether other countries had received similar warnings.
China Airlines said it received the warning from a caller who claimed to work for an anti-terrorist organization in France.
The caller first spoke in French but as the switchboard operator could not understand him, he then switched to Mandarin Chinese, the airline said.
The reported call came just after an attack March 1 in a train station in Kunming, China, in which more than 30 people were killed.
The Aviation Police Bureau said it receives tips on possible attacks once every few months and has always treated them seriously, stepping up security whenever and wherever necessary.

** Based on initial investigations by authorities, passengers with stolen passports might have appeared as Europeans, thus making it difficult for Immigration officers to detect them. (Please read earlier posting below on how a typical Uighur might look like).
*** One of the two ‘European’ passengers traveling on fake passports went past Malaysian Immigration TWICE. First, he made this way from Thailand to Malaysia without raising the alarm. As of now, it has yet to be ascertained if the suspect entered Malaysia from Thailand by road or by air.
****Mikael Robertsson, the co-chairman of Flightradar24, a Stockholm-based service that tracks the majority of the world’s passenger jets, was quoted in New York Times as claiming that data gathered by separate civilian receivers in the region did not appear to show the jet (MH370) as turning around.
Waiting for confirmation from China's MSS on terrorism link.
Intelligence agencies worldwide are waiting for word from China’s powerful intelligence agency, MSS, to make its confirmation if the missing Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 was indeed linked to terrorism.
If the link does not appear to be very strong, then Chinese authorities will wait until wreckage or remains of the aircraft and its black box is found before deciding on anything.
If terrorism is behind this incident, then this marks a new escalation in the terror campaign by the Uighur separatists who are ultimately linked to global terror organization Al-Qaeda.
Two thirds of passengers on board the ill-fated flight were Chinese nationals.
The CIA and FBI as well as the NTSB from United States are also carrying out their own probes.
The Chinese authorities are analyzing important bits of information and are expected to make an announcement soon if they believe the Uighur separatists are behind the incident.

As the race to find the missing Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 enters its second day and intensifies, Chinese investigators are combing through dozens of classified intelligence and surveillance reports to see if they could find any possible clue of terrorists involvement in the disappearance of Malaysia flight MH370.
It is learnt that the investigators are looking back at investigation reports of a 2012 failed hijacking incident in which six men tried to hijack a Tianjin Airlines flight GS7554 from Hotan to Urumqi.
The Chinese authorities later identified the men as Uighur separatists bent on splitting Xinjiang into an independent state.
Note: Chinese authorities have yet to make an official confirmation on terrorists involvement in Flight MH370 as of 7pm local time.

These pictures (below) were taken in the aftermath of the 2011 Japanese Tsunami and look very similar to the one posted above. In the pictures below, debris and other objects float in the sea following the devastating tsunami on 11 March 2011.
The Ministry of State Security (MSS) China, which is one of the world’s most powerful and active intelligence agencies convened a meeting today in Beijing to probe if terror network of Al-Qaeda operatives were working with Uighur separatists and to establish a possible link with the disappearance of Malaysia Airlines flight MH370.
A total of 153 Chinese nationals were on board the flight.
The outcome of the meeting has yet to be known as of 3pm local time.
MSS is an important outfit of the Chinese Government and its objective is to maintain the rule of the Communist Party of China (CPC) which controls the Government and the People’s Liberation Army.
It has agents stationed all over the world posing as ordinary citizens.

Former head of counter-terrorism for the Joint Intelligence Committee and chairman of Cobra, Colonel Richard Kemp was quoted by the Mirror UK as saying the possibility that Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 had been attacked by terrorists must be given serious consideration.
Col Kemp said: "The possibility of this being a terror attack has to be seriously considered.
"Two passengers appeared to be travelling on stolen passports and there was no distress signal.
"We have seen recent terror attacks in China itself.
"We know the Uighurs minority have terrorist links.
"They are Muslim separatist militants and for quite a long time have carried out terrorist attacks.
"Only last weekend they were blamed for the knife attack at a station in Yunnan province, which left 29 dead.
"It is not beyond the bounds of possibility these people could be involved in the latest incident – either the Uighurs themselves or others seeking to support them.
"This group is known to have links with al-Qaeda - and we know that Islamist terrorists remain obsessed with attacks carried out by aircraft.
"Before 9/11 there was a plot based in the Philippines known as Operation Bojinka to bring down airliners flying from Asia to the US.
"It didn't work.
"Since then we have seen various other attempts to use planes as weapons or to blow them up.
"All these considerations point to a distinct possibility that this incident could be terrorism.
"If that proves to be the case, it will be regarded as a major spectacular by the terrorists."

Who were the imposters on Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370?
On March 2, there was a deadly terrorist attack at the Kunming train station in China.

The Uighurs are fair skinned people who look like Europeans.
These pictures below (not of those who boarded flight MH370) are some example of how a typical Uighur looks like.
They could have walked passed airport security with ease looking like an Italian or an Austrian.
This detail could provide vital clue on the disappearance of flight MH370 over the South China Sea in the early hours of Saturday, March 9.
Air safety experts have expressed concerns that the highly disturbing manner in which flight MH370 mysteriously vanished from radar could have been triggered by a terrorist attack.
The Western media, which is providing extensive coverage on missing Flight MH370, has claimed that US officials were checking into passenger manifests and going through intelligence, giving strong indication of possible terrorist involvement.

What is Xinjiang?
Over the course of centuries, the Xinjiang region has been part of many different — and, at times, competing — empires. It has been under Communist rule since the party took control of China in 1949.
For years, many Uighurs and other smaller Muslim minorities in Xinjiang have agitated against China’s authoritarian government. Their protests are a reaction, Uighur groups say, to oppressive official policies, religious restrictions and widespread discrimination.
The Chinese government has long denied any oppression of Uighurs or any other ethnic group.
What do Uighurs in Xinjiang want?
You can’t lump all Uighurs together. Different factions want different things — from more equitable treatment to outright secession from China. Many complaints have to do with China’s religious restrictions.Just as Chinese leaders try to control other religions, including Catholicism and evangelical Christianity, they have issued strict policies for Muslim Uighurs. They must use a state-approved Koran. Mosques are managed by the government. And Uighur men who want government jobs have been forced to shave their beards; women are forbidden to wear head scarves.
Separatists who seek full independence from China call the Xinjiang region “East Turkestan” and want the right to govern themselves.
Human rights groups have been fairly critical of China’s treatment of Uighurs. One of the most egregious examples they cite occurred just weeks ago, when authorities seized a prominent Uighur scholar named Ilham Tohti at his home without explanation.
Who are Uighurs, and why does the name sound familiar?
Readers who closely followed the debate over detainees held by the United States at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, may recall a group of Uighurs who were essentially stranded there for more than a decade, after the U.S. military determined they had no ties to al-Qaeda or the Taliban.
The U.S. government didn’t want to send the Uighurs, who had been captured in Pakistan, back to China because of fears that the Chinese government would persecute them. When U.S. officials tried to transfer them to other countries, China warned the nations not to accept them. Finally, in December, the last three Uighurs were released from Guantanamo to Slovakia. Files released by the group WikiLeaks say the former prisoners were “probable” members of the East Turkestan Islamic Movement, a separatist group that Chinese authorities blame for several attacks in recent years.
Readers in Washington may also remember reports about “the mother of the Uighur movement,”Rebiya Kadeer, a Northern Virginia resident and president of the exile group World Uyghur Congress.
How serious is the Uighur-Chinese conflict?
The violence has been bad for a while. What’s different now is the emergence of targeted terrorist strikes.
Ethnic rioting and clashes in Xinjiang reached a peak in 2009, causing roughly 200 deaths and triggering a crackdown by local authorities. Renewed protests last year also turned violent and are thought to have claimed more than 100 lives.
To Chinese, the most shocking attack blamed on Uighurs occurred in October when a jeep veered into a crowd in Beijing’s Tiananmen Square, then crashed and burst into flames, killing five people. Almost immediately, authorities declared it the work of terrorists from Xinjiang, and within 10 hours of the crash, authorities said they had arrested five suspects who were in possession of long knives and flags calling for “jihad.”
How have Uighurs responded to these attacks?
While some Uighur leaders have condemned the attacks, they have also expressed skepticism about the government’s version of events.
“There is no legitimate reason to attack civilians. We express our condolences to the family members of the dead,” Dilshat Rexit, a spokesman for the World Uyghur Congress, said Sunday. But, he added, “China has to deal with the incident transparently; it cannot serve as a new political excuse for further clamping down on Uighurs, serious discrimination and repressing policies.”
After the Tiananmen Square crash, Kadeer issued this statement: “The Chinese government will not hesitate to concoct a version of the incident in Beijing, so as to further impose repressive measures on the Uighur people.”
Critics accuse the government of using the threat of separatists to justify their heavy-handed security and policies in Xinjiang and fear that the recent incidents will result in tougher crackdowns. http://glodef.blogspot.com/
