San Francisco’s airport will close two of its four runways during the busy summer season to complete a federally mandated safety project, increasing the possibility of travel delays.
The airport will build safety zones at both ends of two runways that handle most of its departures. During construction, all flights from May 17 to September will use SFO’s two other runways.
The airport will take several steps to reduce delays of arriving and departing flights, said San Francisco International Airport spokesman Doug Yakel. For instance the airport will use what it calls a ‘departure management system’ meant to reduce the wait times that airplanes experience before they are cleared to approach runways.
At this time it's not clear whether any flights will be diverted to Mineta San Jose International Airport.
Yakel said SFO often deals with runway closures already. SFO closed two of its runways 100 days last year during inclement weather. He said SFO officials hoped that this summer’s delays – which would more likely affect take-offs rather than landings – would be from five to 15 minutes on average.
When the two runways are closed it will reduce the airport’s capacity by 15 percent, officials said. That means the airport will be able to handle about 80 planes per hour at peak times rather than about 100.
The construction work will cost about $214 million. The federal government will cover about two-thirds of the cost. The remainder will be paid for through bonds the airport will sell.
