Germany urges Brits not to commemorate WWI anniversary. 

GERMANY has urged Britain not to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the start of the First World War.

A special envoy from Munich has held a string of meetings with high-ranking Government officials urging Britain to adopt a “less declamatory tone” – even suggesting it should be used as a chance to heap praise on the EU.

The stance has been ridiculed by campaign groups, with Britain’s main research body on the First World War saying the Germans want the UK to “bend over backwards”.

The Western Front Association says the attempted whitewash would be like holding an event all about the Second World War without mentioning D-Day.

The Germans claim a triumphant centenary campaign could damage relations between the nations at a highly sensitive time for the future of the EU.

The commemorations have long been the subject of intense debate, with historians accusing the Government of concentrating on the human cost of the war to avoid upsetting the Germans.

Andreas Meitzner, Germany’s envoy for the centenary, held meetings earlier this month with senior staff at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.

Norman Walter, from Germany’s London embassy, said: “For us, it is about remembrance and reconciliation, and trying to learn lessons.”

He also said German commemorations would focus on how the EU has brought the nations closer together. Bill Fulton, from the Essex branch of the Western Front Association, said: “We’ve made it clear we should not bend over backwards.

“This delegation seems to be coming at it from a political perspective, but if you’re after a legacy there’s a lot to learn from victories, as well as tragedies. I am surprised as this appears so late in the day. We can’t just ignore the fact a victory happened – imagine saying ‘we’ll remember the Second World War, but won’t mention D-Day’.”

Next year is 100 years since the start of the war and the Department for Culture, Media and Sport is drawing up a programme to salute Britain’s heroes.
The Government has set up an advisory board of historians, authors, academics and former military chiefs to offer advice.

The panel includes Prof Sir Hew Strachan, from Oxford University, who said: “It’s not about being triumphalist, or even necessarily celebratory. It is about acknowledging that when the war ended, there was a victory.”
