Negara tenat hutang RM 1 trillion...

- Rafizi Ramli

Tears flow over sorry state of affairs...

Dear Datuk Seri, tears rolled down my cheeks as I started writing this. How could a man of your stature and wealth be reduced to going around with a begging bowl for expenses? I am in no position to help. Although you gave me several contracts, I am no longer having a bank account with a hefty balance.

This letter comes from a mountain retreat – a monastery – where I am not exactly atoning for my past debaucheries and turpitudes. I am in hiding on the pretext of meditating. I am supposed to be cut off from modern-day trappings like mobile phones and access to the Internet, but there’s nothing money cannot buy.

Remember? You told us all that cash is king!

You will recall the sadhu (sage) whom I had brought to bless you and Datin Seri at your home on several occasions? He was the long-haired and bearded man who threw sea-shells and foresaw the future for both of you. He should not be mistaken for the bald-bearded and bare-bodied priest who carried out the prayers and made the offerings on your behalf.

Unlike many fair-weathered friends, they have not abandoned nor forgotten me. I had previously given them excellent introductions and good “business” from your family and other VIPs. In a form of retribution, they have provided me with a safe haven.

Hence, I am for the moment safe in this sanctuary – away from the debt collectors; the numerous deals which went sour; scores of people I short-changed; the contractors I refused to pay; and hundreds of unpaid workers.

For a while, the lenders paid for six bodyguards to make sure that I remain alive and kicking. They believed that I will eventually repay the loans with interest. When they realised they can’t expect anything from me, they terminated their services and left me to the dogs.

Our mutual friend – Peter – in Jakarta wasn’t helpful either. I called him for help and money. He didn’t want to risk landing his private jet in Malaysia. The pilots did not want a repeat of the May 12 events on the tarmac of the Subang airport. He said the mutual moneychanger we all had used had been arrested and is singing like a canary giving explicit details of our dealings, especially Datin Seri’s.

Instead, I was compelled to take a commercial flight – heavily disguised and seated in cattle class. I was worried that the peasants in the aircraft would recognise me because of my height. However, I came away unscathed and unrecognised.

Before I left, I was touched reading about the gesture by two ladies who gave their gold bracelets towards your legal fund.

Last night, I was saddened to read about another fund-raising effort. I was wondering why you do not want to seek from the Legal Aid Bureau. After all, it was set up to help those who can’t afford legal fees.

Lawyers don’t come cheap and I should know better. I have not paid two lawyers fees in the region of RM1 million who helped stave off bankruptcy proceedings. Some will demand money upfront before even sitting and talking to you.

I presume they will be knocking on my doors but if I was around, I would unchain my ferocious bulldogs. Datuk Seri, many lawyers got so many briefs to prepare (lop-sided) contract documents. Shouldn’t they step forward and do pro bono work for you.

Datuk Seri, where are the friends who accepted handouts from you? Like a fairy, you had given money like candies to them. What about that CGPA 3.8 fellow from Johor? He admitted to receiving a couple of million and how he pretends not to know your plight. I know that you gave about RM10 million to a hot-shot lawyer to buy a house for his friend. Recall that loan.

But on the other hand, many cronies may not want to flaunt their wealth. With all eyes on money laundering and other illegal activities, they don’t want to be prosecuted for their unexplainable wealth.

Image result for najib n sprm

Datuk Seri, I am extremely sorry that I am unable to assist in any way at this juncture. I also do not have the “get me out of jail” card. I am obligated to you for the contracts; Datin Seri for the calls to banks to sort out my RM500 loan, and the assistance rendered to “get me out of trouble” on many occasions.

It takes a man with a big heart to order enforcement agencies to tutup satu mata (close one eye) on many of my transgressions. For all these, I am indebted to you.

But then, I just watched a tear-jerker on satellite television and wondering if all these are scenes from a Bollywood movie. In movies, the bad guys eventually are killed or end up in jail.

Judging from our past actions, our sadhu said that we will be not viewed as good guys. He said: “Be remorseful and repent, you will have a lot of time to that in internment.” I still do not know what he meant. Will I be an intern somewhere? Which company or in Bamboo River resort?

PS: The sadhu also told me that he had warned Datin Seri to stay away from diamonds – stolen, donated or purchased.

There’s danger in those stones as they do not match her appearance and demeanour. She never listened, did she?

All the best, Sir.
Yours, faithfully,
Short Ken

Halang Dr M jadi PM adalah pengetahuan umum...

Image result for agong,dr.m dan wan azizah semasa angkat sumpah

- fmt

Why Anwar must win in Port Dickson...

I was delighted to be asked to speak in Lukut last night in support of Anwar Ibrahim. Unfortunately, there were just too many VVIPs speakers which left no time for a free agent like me. Still, this is what I would have said, in case you want to know.

Ladies and gentlemen,

The last time I shared the same platform as Anwar Ibrahim during a political campaign was eight years ago, in Hulu Selangor.

There, I was the candidate for the parliamentary by-election and Anwar was campaigning for me. He did me the honour of promoting me as the candidate although I was just a rookie in PKR. I am grateful for that. Unfortunately, I lost by 1,750 votes to the combined forces of Najib Razak and Dr Mahathir Mohamad. In those days, it was okay for cash to be king, and Felda voters gave everything to Najib in appreciation for his millions.

I am here to lend support to Anwar. This election is a continuation of the people’s victory on May 9. We need to win this one so that there will be continuation of the reformasi movement in the country. We need to get rid of corrupt leaders, for sure, and this process has started. But corruption and abuse of power are not the only threat to our country. Equally dangerous is the racist and hate politics that have been adopted by PAS and Umno in their political struggle.

PAS uses religion to hide its racist policies. This is the party whose candidate in Port Dickson declares that Liew Chin Tong from DAP should not have been appointed deputy defence minister because he is not “qualified” – a disguised attack because he is not a Malay and a Muslim. This is the party whose president believes that only Muslims should be top leaders of this country. In Indonesia, such a racist party and its candidate would not be allowed to contest in an election. The candidate would be disqualified by the Election Commission (EC) immediately. Unfortunately, here the EC is powerless to do the same.

Image result for anwar and zaid ibrahim

PAS is a threat to the security and stability of the country, yet we allow it to contest in an election. The Registrar of Societies should have deregistered PAS years ago because it misrepresented itself to the people, saying it is synonymous with Islam. Its leaders manage to hoodwink the people into thinking that Islam and their politics are the same. Their leaders openly reject a multicultural Malaysia, they reject democracy, they reject Muslims who do not look like them, and of course they reject non-Muslims too. In these circumstances, I appeal to the voters in Port Dickson to make sure PAS is defeated

I support Anwar because he will not allow this country to be run on racial and religious lines. His party is multiracial and multi-religious. This is our guarantee that he will not deviate from his original struggles. He has strong Islamic credentials that will allow him, together with more progressive Muslim leaders like Mujahid Yusof Rawa and others, to deal with PAS. If we as a country lose this battle against PAS, we will lose our way of life and our democracy. Anwar is the best person we have to defeat PAS, and we must start this journey in Port Dickson.

In addition, Anwar will be a different kind of prime minister. I believe he will take better care of the “small people”, based on his fight against poverty and for the downtrodden in his younger days. Anwar menang, Port Dickson dan Malaysia senang. That’s why I urge Port Dickson voters to come out and vote for Anwar: send the message that our work was not finished on May 9, and what this country needs to move forward is a concerted effort from everyone.

I am gratified to note that DAP leaders, in particular Gobind Singh, have come out strongly in support of Anwar as the next prime minister, although Mat Sabu and Amanah are keeping quiet on this issue. Maybe they do not want to upset the current prime minister in case their position in the Cabinet is affected. Fully understandable, but unacceptable nonetheless.

Next week, Anwar will be sworn in by the speaker as a member of Parliament. To many Anwar supporters in the country, this will be a day to rejoice. But I want to caution them: becoming a Pakatan Harapan backbencher would be the start of misery for Anwar.

Anwar needs to be made deputy prime minister immediately, not left to languish in Parliament as another ordinary MP. The world would look askance at Malaysia having someone touted as the future prime minister sitting on the back bench. What will he do and how long will he sit there before he becomes prime minister?

Has there ever been a prime minister who was not a deputy first? No. If we are serious and sincere about Anwar becoming the prime minister, then we need to have him in place as deputy so that he can start learning to work with the prime minister again. Given their history, it will not be easy for either, but they have to start now. The country needs certainty and no more infighting between factions. The people want the succession issue resolved. They want the machinery of government moving in top gear.

If we are sincere about Anwar becoming prime minister, we need to ensure that he has the respect and acceptance of all Cabinet members, MPs and the world. He will not get that just by being proclaimed as the prime minister-in-waiting. Anwar needs the deputy prime minister’s position before he can get the cooperation and respect of Cabinet members.

What will he do as a member of Parliament? He has no position in Parliament right now. He can ask questions about bills and policies, and the ministers will give a proper answer if they know he is really the next prime minister. If Anwar wants to develop Port Dickson as a tourist attraction, or seeks to help Kelantan in its perennial flood problems, what does he do? He appeals to the minister concerned who will probably refer the matter to the some eminent person or the prime minister. Then what? His life will be miserable because he becomes a post box.

No one can govern by “moral authority”. No one becomes prime minister by the grace of his friends, and a few in the Cabinet are not even friends of Anwar. He becomes prime minister only because he has enough support in Parliament. If he has, then why not make him a deputy now ? If he does not have the numbers, then spare him the misery of calling him “prime minister-in-waiting”. Keep that description away until the PH leadership is ready to name him as prime minister.

My message to Port Dickson voters is simple. You must vote for Anwar because we need a clear succession plan. Our country has too many problems to be resolved, and we cannot afford anymore leadership infighting. We must not allow a PAS-Umno tie-up which would be disastrous for the country. For that, we need Anwar as our deputy prime minister next week. That way, he can immediately strengthen the current Cabinet, and he can start doing proper work to prepare him to be prime minister. If we are serious about him becoming the prime minister, this is what we must do. - Zaid Ibrahim, fmt

MMC-Gamuda jangan buli kami...

Seperti yang disebut pengarah Gamuda dalam mesyuarat bersama menteri pada 4 September – “we offer what we can offer, but anything beyond that will be meaningless to continue”.

*Pengarah Urusan
MMC: RM5.5J setahun / RM458K sebulan / RM15K sehari
Gamuda: RM4.8J setahun / RM400K sebulan / RM13K sehari
*Seluruh Lembaga
MMC: RM8.13J setahun / RM677K sebulan / RM22k sehari
Gamuda: RM16.36J setahun / RM1.36J sebulan / RM45k sehari

Tetapi kalau begitulah cara wakil rakyat, ia sangat huduh.

Image may contain: 1 person, eyeglasses, meme and text

A day in Port Dickson...
I met nasi lemak seller Aishah at Sunggala night market in Port Dickson.

She told me delightfully, "Datuk Seri Anwar came to my stall just now. I took pictures and shook hands with him."

"Wow! Datuk Seri is your idol, huh?" I asked.

"Of course! I'm not going to wash my hands for days!"

Not everyone at the night market was as excited as Aishah. They politely shook hands with Anwar and then got back to their chores. Sunggala is a Malay-majority neighborhood, and the night market here is among the busiest in town. Understandably it is a must-visit place for candidates.

Not long after Anwar left the night market, another candidate, Mohd Isa Samad, arrived. I noticed that the elderly here appeared to be more familiar with Isa while the younger were generally more indifferent to him.

A young stall owner asked a friend after Isa left, "So, this is Isa Pendik, ya?" Ia Pendik is Mohd Isa's nickname acquired when he was MB three decades ago.

When Isa came to Aishah's stall, she also shook hands with him politely, and asked for a badge with his picture on it. I asked Aishah why she also supported Isa.

"No, I only support Anwar, but my father is Isa's supporter and I want to bring this badge home for him."

Port Dickson is a mixed constituency with 43% of Malay voters, 33% Chinese and 22% Indians. Such a racial make-up gives Anwar the upper hand, but as the country's next prime minister, Anwar needs to win it big, with significant Malay support in order to be convincing.

If Anwar wins only with strong support from the Chinese and Indians, his image, along with that of PKR and Pakatan Harapan in the Malay society, will be compromised. And this will also give Umno and PAS a good reason to attack Anwar as the "future PM" is not representing majority of Malays. Anwar absolutely has the confidence to win the Malay votes.

In GE14, although Danyal Balagopal Abdullah won the parliamentary seat, he lost in two predominantly Malay state seats Bagan Pinang and Linggi. The older generation are still sentimentally attached to Isa, who was MB for more than 20 years.

Anwar and Isa will vie for the precious Malay votes in PD. As for PAS' Mohd Nazari, many seem to have given him a miss. A retired soldier to me most of the Malays would continue to support Isa.

"Even though he has left Umno, and Umno does not field a candidate here, Umno supporters will have to pick Isa."

But his image among the younger generation has been tainted by money politics and Felda scandal. PD voters staying outstation make up more than 30% of the total, and most of them are youngsters. If these people do not return to PD in droves to vote, Isa may have an advantage. This is what concerns Anwar.

From Sunggala I went to Linggi where there was a major ceramah featuring Anwar Ibrahim, In front of the listeners, Anwar was trying very hard to convince the Malay society that the PH government will continue to protect the rights of the Malays. He also told them he was having a good relationship with Tun Mahathir and that Mahathir would come to PD on Monday to campaign for him.

Perhaps these are the two things Anwar needs most now: trust from the Malay society and support from Mahathir, which can both be seen here in Port Dickson. - mysinchew

Dr.M and Anwar Ibrahim campaign together
for the first time in 20 years...
Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad campaigned on Monday for his designated successor and former foe Anwar Ibrahim, urging voters to support Anwar’s return to active politics.

Mahathir’s appearance at a late-night political rally marked the first time in two decades that the two leaders shared the same stage, after setting aside a bitter political feud to form an alliance that won a stunning victory in May 9 national elections.

Mahathir, 93, was elected a second time to become the world’s oldest leader in the country’s first transition of power since independence from Britain in 1957. Anwar couldn’t participate in the polls due to a 2015 conviction for sodomy that he alleged was politically motivated, but he was freed and pardoned by King Muhammad V days after the general elections.

Anwar faces six other candidates but is expected to easily win Sunday’s parliamentary by-election to fill a vacant seat for the southern coastal town of Port Dickson in his bid to return to parliament and prepare for his eventual takeover from Mahathir.

Mahathir had earlier said he would not go to Port Dickson to campaign for Anwar because the race was a minor by-election – but changed his mind in a move that appeared symbolic to show that the past conflict between the two former rivals had been buried.

“I hope that in this by-election, victory will be given to the Alliance of Hope, to Anwar. I hope that we can continue to work together … not for Mahathir or Anwar but for our beloved country,” Mahathir told about 2,000 people seated in a large tent for the rally. Dozens of others with umbrellas stood outside because the tent was packed.

Mahathir’s spoke little about Anwar, using most of his speech to promote a united government to tackle huge national debts due to massive corruption under the previous government.

Anwar was once a high-flying member of the former ruling coalition but was convicted of homosexual sodomy and corruption after a power struggle in 1998 with Mahathir, who was prime minister for 22 years until 2003. Anwar was freed in 2004 and convicted again in 2015 of sodomy – charges he said were concocted to destroy his political career.

Angered by a monumental graft scandal at a state investment fund, Mahathir made a political comeback and the two forged a new opposition alliance in a gamble that paid off in May polls.

Anwar, in his speech, paid tribute to Mahathir as a statesman who helped save the country from the brink of economic destruction. He reiterated that he will focus on parliamentary reforms and has no intention of interfering with Mahathir’s governance.

“In this current situation, it is better for Mahathir to lead the country. I say this with all humility. I love him as a father and as a leader. I fought against him and now I accept that he is the best man to lead Malaysia now,” Anwar said.

Mahathir has said he expects to be in office for at least two years and will keep his promise to hand over power to Anwar. - SCMP

Tak kan kuasa Agong pun hangpa nak persoal...

Permainan PAS no class...

- MSO

Quelling the rumors...

Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad changed his mind, traveling to Port Dickson to campaign for the country's eighth prime minster Anwar Ibrahim in a move to dispel rumors that the two leaders are not in good terms.

There have been a lot of rumors lately about Tun M and Anwar. Among them, PKR deputy president Azmin Ali and Council of the Elders chairman Tun Daim Zainuddin were said to be trying to stop Anwar from taking over the PM post; PKR is said to be split into two factions, one led by Anwar to form a new alliance with Umno while the other led by Azmin is to stay in Pakatan.

There were also talks Azmin would take over as prime minster while Mahathir's son Mukhriz would be his deputy. Similarly, there are also many unverified "stories" evolving around the Port Dickson by-election. For example, the Mahathir-led PPBM does not want Anwar to become prime minister, and the Negeri Sembilan PPBM was dissolved on the eve of nomination, giving the party an excuse not to campaign for Anwar.

On top of that, former Negeri Sembilan MB Mohd Isa Samad was said to have been sent by Mahathir to confront Anwar in PD. Anwar will still win with or without the help from PPBM, but his image could be tarnished if voter turnout is poor and he does not get a lot of Malay votes, not to mention many more rumors that will pop up after the by-election to affect investor confidence.

As a consequence, Tun Mahathir announced after chairing the PH presidential council meeting that he would show up in PD with other PH component party leaders on Monday night.

"They’re talking about my quarrel with Anwar and saying I don't support Anwar because of the quarrel," he said.

Image result for mahathir and anwar in 1998
The last time Mahathir campaigned for a candidate (BN) in a by-election was in Bukit Gantang in 2009. This time, he is doing something to shatter the customary practice that a sitting prime minister should not campaign for a candidate in a by-election. This shows that indeed he bothers a lot about the rumors.

It is believed that the same question was raised by other PH leaders at the presidential council meeting, and had proposed that Mahathir campaign for Anwar in PD because if the rumors are not quelled soonest, local businesses and foreign investors might have the impression that Malaysia is politically unstable.

As soon as the decision was made, Mahathir instructed Simpang Renggam MP Maszlee Malik to visit the voters at several locations in PD on the same afternoon while officiating the election campaign office there. Maszlee, who is also the education minister, was the first PPBM leader to campaign in PD, focusing mainly on Bagan Pinang state assembly seat currently held by Umno. Isa won with a landslide there in 2009 by-election.

Compared to Chinese and Indian voters, response of the PD Malay community appears to be rather subdued. Tun M's arrival is poised to raise the Malay turnout so that Anwar can win with a much bigger majority. Campaigning as a team will further strengthen Anwar's position but may also affect the PKR elections, as this will mean Rafizi Ramli's allegation that Azmin is trying to block Anwar's access to premiership is unsubstantiated.

As a matter of fact, given the more diverse background of PH component parties, the coalition should be able to come up with a stronger team to run a multiracial country like Malaysia for the simple reason leaders of its component parties will understand better the needs of people from different cultural backgrounds.

Having said that, the coalition must also improve on its leadership structure and build up its self confidence so as to concentrate on reforming the country, revitalizing the economy, fulfilling its election pledges and boosting administrative efficiency. PH's current evasive attitude in meeting its election pledges such as UEC recognition, child marriage, LGBT and repeal of draconian laws has eroded public trust towards the government.

Malaysia is a polarized country with organizations lobbying for democracy and freedom but also extreme rightist groups. As such, Anwar can play a positive role as a dialogue partner with the Muslim community in a bid to dissolve radical religious sentiment, given his profound knowledge in Islam.

If Mahathir and Anwar can put their differences behind them and work together, they will make a perfect team whereby Mahathir will concentrate on administrative reform and corruption-fighting while Anwar can help battle religious extremism and theocracy so that the country can move forward towards the goal of a developed nation and New Malaysia.

Different component parties within the PH coalition have their own varying political platforms, and must therefore come together and settle their differences before they develop into a full-blown conflict. Quelling the rumors with actions is a positive move in this direction. I believe an integrated PH will emerge even stronger in taking the country forward in the days to come. - mysinchew

Gobind Singh Deo - MCMC
Greedy Telcos Continue To Hoodwink Government and  Consumers On Lower Internet Prices...

The local telecommunication companies appear to be upset with the new government’s noble plan to provide more affordable entry-level plans for Internet access. For as long as one can remember, the greedy telcos have been milking consumers with pathetic packages – highest price for lowest speed possible – until the spectacular collapse of Barisan Nasional government.

The new Communications and Multimedia Minister – Gobind Singh Deo – has made it his personal mission to give the local telcos a run for their money. Of course, the service providers, Telekom Malaysia (TM), Maxis, Celcom and Time, aren’t happy that their cash cow cannot be milked the same way anymore. Initially, they dragged their feet and demanded more time.

Unfortunately, Mr. Gobind isn’t the same minister from the previous incompetent government who could be pushed around. On paper, the telcos seemed agreeable to the price reduction and speed increase brought about by the Mandatory Standard on Access Pricing (MSAP), first announced by the new Pakatan Harapan government in on June 20.

Gobind announced in June – “The relevant parties are currently in commercial discussions to finalise the wholesale prices. The process is scheduled to be concluded in July or August, after which new, lower priced broadband packages will be rolled out to consumers.” He also said the Government was considering recognising access to the Internet as a basic human right in Malaysia.

TM Telekom Malaysia Building
Mr. Gobind wants broadband “pricing to be halved” and “speed doubled”. But that’s easier said than done. Telekom Malaysia, probably emboldened by the fact that they are the big boy in the market, deliberately published a pricing structure on its website that seemed different from what the regulator, Malaysian Communications Multimedia Commission’s (MCMC), had suggested.

TM, being the biggest access provider of fast broadband, could strong-arm the government because other companies like Celcom Axiata Bhd, Digi.Com Bhd, Maxis Bhd, U Mobile and others were the access seekers. Eventually, it was announced that fixed broadband prices in the country are expected to drop by at least 25% by year’s end – only half of what Mr. Gobind had wanted.

However, even a 25% reduction has sent TM’s stock price plunging as investors didn’t like the impact on TM’s earnings in the future. The long term solution is to break the monopoly currently enjoyed by TM and allows electricity provider TNB (Tenaga Nasional Berhad) – even foreign players for that matter – to leverage on its network to penetrate more households across the nation.

Under Communications and Multimedia Ministry and MCMC’s tremendous pressure, four telecommunication companies finally announced starter packages for under RM100 per month. For TM, the 30 Mbps plan priced at RM139 a month is reduced by 43% to RM79, while Celcom’s 40 Mbps package, is down by 56% from RM180 down to RM80 a month.

Image result for slow internet access
TIME, which offers the fastest speed at 100 Mbps, reduced its monthly package price by 34% from RM149 to RM99 while Maxis reduced its 30 Mbps plan from RM139 to RM89 per month, giving users a saving of 36%. Heck, TIME even offers higher-speed packages via the introduction of a Gigabit level package for RM199, the first time that Gigabit level speed is made available.

So, what does all this mean? The simple fact that the telcos can cut their packages to 34% to 56% cheaper means the greedy service providers have been fleecing the consumers for years, if not decades. They have been taking the people for a ride with overpriced packages and inferior services. Even after the latest discounts (34% to 56%), they can still make good profits.

But even with the introduction of new entry-level plans below RM100 that are more than 30% cheaper, the service providers could still find ways to cheat consumers. Without consumers realizing it, it was nothing but marketing gimmick. The gimmick was to give the consumers higher speed, not lower price. The objective was to maintain as much as possible their annual revenue.

Exactly how could you save money driving a Ferrari from your home to office during peak hour? Sure, the internet speed has been given a bump of up to 10 times more. It was like forcing a consumer to buy a 20-piece bucket of chicken at KFC when he / she could only eat 2 or 3 pieces. Telcos knew not everyone requires the 30 Mbps plan, let alone the 100 Mbps.

Broadband Access - Engineer and Workers

Selling 10Mbps at RM30 a month obviously isn’t as profitable as dumping 30Mbps for RM90. Adding insult to the injury, there’s no guarantee that subscribers will get the full 30Mbps speed advertised due to technical jargons such as throttling, network latency, congestion, distance from ISP, port issues and whatnot. So, telcos can simply say they are giving free speed bump without actually giving the real juice.

Even then, the so-called lower price packages come with lots of obstacles. Maxis, for example, said the upgrade was not automatic for existing customers as they have to first pick one of two plans – 30Mbps at RM89 or 100Mbps at RM129 per month. TM’s free upgrade for existing users, which supposedly started in August, is crawling at snail pace and could go beyond the first quarter of next year.

Amusingly, TM Unifi sales have told long-time customers that the only way to opt for the cheaper and faster plan is to terminate their current package and sign up for a new one. Yes, not every existing TM users are on the list for the free upgrade. The priority is given to new customers for obvious reason – to capture new market.

Another issue discovered by Mr. Gobind Singh is that many Streamyx users are still not eligible to be upgraded to Unifi due to lack of infrastructure. In other words, customers staying at condos or apartments could be short-changed. The government should give the telcos an ultimatum – if they still pussyfooting, they would be slapped with penalties. - ft

Projek Gajah Putih Akademi Mokhtar Dahari ...

Silakan.

- Yahaya Ismail

Zahid to be charged?...

Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi is expected to face MACC charges in regards to the alleged misappropriation of a foundation's funds.

A MACC source said he is most likely to be charged on Thursday, and if that is true, it means he will be spending the night on the MACC premises.

Zahid, however, had tweeted today that MACC would only be recording his statement and advised his supporters against holding a gathering in front of MACC headquarters this Wednesday.

In July, Zahid was questioned twice by the MACC in relation to the Akal Budi Foundation. It was reported that RM800,000 had allegedly been misappropriated from the foundation to pay for credit card bills belonging to Zahid and his wife.

Zahid had said that funds from the welfare foundation were indeed used to clear credit card debts but claimed that this was due to a mistake by his officer.

Meanwhile, another source close to the matter said Zahid could be facing tough days ahead as the MACC has not only been investigating him and his family on a resort project in Bagan Datuk as well as the source of wealth in a family member's bank account.

Massive resort project

In April, Bernama reported that Zahid launched the project, known as the Teedo resort which cost about RM75 million, during a ground-breaking ceremony attended by his wife and daughter.

Zahid was quoted as saying that the project would be done without government funding.

"For your information, the construction of this hotel will be done without a single sen of government money and even the land and infrastructure will be financed 100 percent by the private sector," he had said.

It is understood that the 60-hectare resort will house a commercial zone, a shopping centre, restaurants, a theme park and a religious school with a total gross development costing about RM250 million, reported Bernama. - mk
If you do the crime, you must do the time...

When I was much younger than Pekan MP Najib Abdul Razak’s daughter, Nooryana Najwa, I was seated in one of the clusters of creaky wooden buildings along Jalan Duta which was the Magistrate’s Court. A lady clad in a baju kurung sobbed after being jailed for two years for stealing jewellery from her employer.

I have watched several jaga kereta being brought in handcuffs to be charged. Their offence? Not producing their identity cards when requested by a policeman. The sentence was a fine of RM25 (big money at that time) or two weeks after pleading guilty. Guess which route they opted for?

Later, when “promoted” to cover the Sessions Courts, I listened to lies on oath, pleas in mitigation and other utterances which would sometimes tug your heart. The felons - robbers, rapists, thieves and extortionists – some of whom were sweet-talkers would try to talk themselves out of trouble. There was no one shedding a tear for them except in some cases, an elderly woman hoping her wayward son would be given a chance to turn over a new leaf.

Much later, I sat stone-faced as one inspector Saderi Abdul Samat, a convicted murderer (incidentally the man who prosecuted him was Mohd Shafee Abdullah) had his last visitors before he was hanged the following morning at the Pudu Prison. While the father, mother and son were locked in embrace and tears, I sat recording those final moments in my mind for the Malay Mail.

On Wednesday, tears flowed outside the court complex in Jalan Duta after Rosmah Mansor was charged with 17 counts of money laundering and avoiding tax. Tears came not from her parents or their family but from one Ramesh Rao who gained infamy for making all kinds of allegations when Sarawak Report was releasing one leak after another on the 1MDB scandal.

“She’s like a mother,” he declared between sobs and spoke of the virtues and qualities of the Najib’s wife.

Nearby, there was a virtuoso performance by actress Ellie Suriati for the media. Like in a real-life drama, she declared “It’s really ridiculous and bogus,” of the charges against Rosmah. (She got her five minutes of fame – UK’s Guardian newspaper quoted her)

From far-away Chicago came yet another harangue from Nooryana. She went on a tirade: "I can accept taking action on a man who was in power, but putting the women in his life in harm's way is going too far. Two weeks ago, you raided his mother's house, and today, you remand (sic) his wife, and plan on charging her the same day her husband is due in court. I suppose tomorrow makes for a great picture and media circus.”

Going too far? Media circus? The circus folded its tent and closed shop in the early hours of May 10 when we elected a new government. The days when the mainstream media recorded even the length and sound of your father letting out gas are over. They then did it not for posterity but for fear his minders would take offence.

In a lengthy Instagram post, she said: “Too sad to cry, too angry to scream, I just got up, took wuduk (ablution) and prayed tahjud (night prayer) for Mummy.” Social media reacted to her post, to the point of being unmannerly and abusive.

Answers forthcoming at trial?

There were other points to ponder. The extravagant wedding, the highly-publicised cost of the flowers and the decorations raised eyebrows. Explaining such indulgence on June 9 last year, I remarked: “The discovery of cash in the millions at the homes of officials of the Sabah Water Board made the transfer of RM2 million into the account of an unemployed housewife child’s play. Has anyone explained?

“How would you describe such overindulgence? Crazy or madness or insanity? Yet, these people whose hands are tainted continue to lead lives, living up with the Joneses and pretend as if nothing had happened.” Hopefully, many answers will be forthcoming when the trial comes underway next year.

On Thursday, I asked on Facebook: Why is there so much hatred of this lady (Rosmah)? Some of the responses are unprintable because of the caustic language and scathing words. There was not a single respondent who had something good to say. Without a proper survey, it would be wrong to use comments on social media as a yardstick to measure her popularity or disapproval.

But the designer bags, the extravagant shopping trips and her taste for diamonds which have been chronicled in the international and later in local media have certainly influenced their opinion. There is little sympathy for the once self-acclaimed First Lady of Malaysia and the use of government apparatus with little regard for rules and regulations.

The many in high places who had incurred her wrath are quietly enjoying the retribution, thanking the Almighty for answering their prayers. Nothing personal but I strongly believe in the adage: If you do the crime, you must do the time. Anything less will be a travesty and mockery of justice. - R.Nadeswaran
